The Enigmatic Curse of Ashley-Alexander House: Unraveling Little Rock’s Haunted Legacy

Nestled just 12 miles from Little Rock, the unassuming Ashley-Alexander House, originally Ashley Mill Plantation, unfolds a haunting legacy rooted in history and wrapped in a mysterious curse. Built in 1835 by Chester Ashley, a prominent landowner and former US Senator, the home weaves a tale of wealth, tragedy, and spectral encounters that have left an indelible mark on its walls.

Chester Ashley’s ownership of the plantation lasted until his death in 1848, paving the way for Watt Worthen to take possession for the next decade. However, it wasn’t until Arthur L. Alexander arrived in Arkansas in 1883 that the house truly became intertwined with an eerie saga. Arthur, along with his three cousins, settled in Scott, eventually moving into the Ashley Mill Plantation in December 1898, despite financial constraints. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for the home.

Otelia George, Arthur’s wife, played a pivotal role in unraveling the mysteries that surrounded the home. The haunting occurrences began early on, as Otelia spotted a black woman in the mirror’s reflection shortly after moving in. However, the apparition vanished abruptly as she turned to confront it. Intrigued and frightened, Otelia discovered that a previous owner had a child with a slave, leading to their expulsion from the property. In retaliation, the spurned mother placed a curse upon the home, foretelling tragedies every five years.

Despite her pragmatic demeanor, Otelia couldn’t ignore the ominous pattern that unfolded like clockwork every half-decade. Tragedies—deaths, fires, floods, financial woes—struck the house and its occupants with an eerie precision. While publicly dismissing belief in ghosts, Otelia privately grappled with the unsettling reality of the curse’s manifestations. A newspaper article from 1949 captured her defiant stance: “Don’t think for a moment that I believe in ghosts.” Yet, the relentless recurrence of misfortunes every five years fueled whispers of the supernatural.
