Israel responds to Gaza rocket fire with attacks on the Gaza Strip

On Friday, Palestinian militants fired two rockets from the Gaza Strip toward southern Israel, which were intercepted by Israeli missile defence systems, and Israel responded by launching attacks on Gaza.

Following Israel’s incursion into the West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday, cross-border fire erupted, resulting in the highest number of deaths in a single day in years.

Both missiles set off sirens in Israeli areas near the Gaza border, warning residents to seek shelter in bunkers. According to Reuters, there were no injuries.

For their part, security sources in Gaza told AFP that 15 strikes were carried out with no reports of casualties.

Our correspondent confirmed that rocket barrages have been fired again from Gaza as Iron Dome continues its interception efforts.

He confirmed that Israeli fighters bombed a military site in the central Gaza Strip.

And Israel’s Channel 12 broadcast a video clip of Israeli interceptor missiles flying over the city of Ashkelon, 12 kilometres north of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

Hours later, the Israeli military said it had carried out strikes in Gaza, according to Reuters.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli aircraft targeted a Hamas training camp, but there were no reports of injuries.

Tensions rose after Israeli special forces killed nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, in an attack on Jenin.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad have vowed to respond to the attack on Jenin, but neither party has so far claimed responsibility for firing the rockets.

Israeli airstrikes on Jenin kill and injure Palestinians.

After the violence in Jenin, the Palestinian National Authority announced it was suspending security coordination with Israel in the West Bank, widely attributed to helping maintain order in the West Bank and preventing attacks on Israel. The Palestinian Authority has previously suspended cooperation with Israel several times in protest.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was not looking to escalate the situation, despite ordering security forces to remain vigilant in various areas.

Officials from the United States, the United Nations, and Arab countries have spoken to Israeli officials and Palestinian factions to prevent clashes in Jenin, which has witnessed intense Israeli activity in the West Bank, from escalating into a wider conflict.
